Scope and workspace:

The position is dedicated to managing, maintaining and operating high-end analytical infrastructure and periphery instruments, conducting analytical campaigns, and developing microanalytical methods. The Laboratory for Field-Emission Scanning Electron microscopy and Focused Ion Beam Applications at the Department of Lithospheric Research hosts an FEI Quanta 3D FEG scanning electron microscope with integrated ion column and various detector systems for material characterization at high spatial resolution. The position will be embedded in the Core Facility “Electron Beam Microanalysis”, which will be established at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, a collaborative international scientific environment, in October 2024. The position comprises self-independent conduction of analytical projects as service to researchers, students and other users, the execution of instrument maintenance services, the advancement of electron beam microanalytical infrastructure and methods, as well as the management of analytical data considering the FAIR data principles.

Job Profile:

As Electron Microscopy Specialist you will ensure continuous operation, efficient usage and advancement of instruments and analytical methods in the Laboratory for Field-Emission Scanning Electron microscopy and Focused Ion Beam Applications. You will contribute to designing analytical campaigns and to preparing samples for analytical tasks (e.g. coating of non-conductive samples). You will collect analytical data by self-independently operating scanning electron microscopes for electron optical imaging, EDX- and EBSD analysis, and you will apply Focused Ion Beam (FIB) nanomachining. You will adapt and optimize analytical workflows according to the various research aims and tasks. Furthermore, you will perform instrument maintenance, organize service visits by external companies, arrange acquisition of consumables, document instrument usage and service, and contribute to preparing yearly reports on instrument performance and usage. As part of a team of scientists and technical staff you will contribute to running and developing the CF “Electron Beam Microanalysis”, ensuring efficient usage of the analytical infrastructure. 

Your Profile:

Required qualifications (MUST CRITERIA)

  • Special technical education (HTL Matura) or Bachelor/Master (or higher) degree (FH or University) in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, Materials Science, Geosciences, or related fields
  • Hands-on experience in self-independent operation of scanning electron microscopes 

(SED-/BSED imaging, EDX analysis)

  • Experience in technical support of analytical infrastructure
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Diligent, reliable and autonomous approach to work

Additional qualifications (PREFERABLE CRITERIA)

  • Experience in laboratory management
  • Experience in Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis
  • Experience in nanomachining using focused ion beam (FIB) methods
  • Experience in data management involving complex analytical datasets
  • Fluent in spoken and written German
