Scope and workspace:

The Department of Lithospheric Research has a vacancy for a Senior Scientist. The position is dedicated to conduct and support research in the field of petrology with methodological focus on spatially resolved analysis of microstructures and crystallographic textures of geomaterials using state-of-the-art electron beam microanalytical techniques. The position will be embedded in the Core Facility “Electron Beam Microanalysis”, which will be established at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy in October 2024. Along with research and teaching in a collaborative international scientific environment, the position is dedicated to various steps of research data management from planning analytical campaigns, via data collection, data processing and evaluation, to publication and (long term) data storage while considering the FAIR data principles.

Job Profile:

As holder of the advertised Senior Scientist position, you will lead and conduct research projects after successful acquirement of third-party funding, and contribute to other projects in the frame of national and international collaborations. You will support users of the Core Facility “Electron Beam Microanalysis” in preparing analytical tasks, and in operating state-of-the-art scanning electron microscopes to generate research data of highest quality. In particular, you will further develop applications of electron diffraction in scanning electron microscopy, as are Electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis and Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging (ECCI). Furthermore, you will act as data steward to develop and establish a data management concept for electron beam microanalytical data. As part of a team of scientists and technical staff you will contribute to running, developing and promoting the Core Facility “Electron Beam Microanalysis”, ensuring efficient usage of the analytical infrastructure. Further, you will share your knowledge and experience by teaching and supervising students at graduate, undergraduate and predoctoral level. 

Your Profile:

Required qualifications (MUST CRITERIA)

  • PhD or equivalent degree in Petrology, Mineralogy, Geology, Materials Science or related fields
  • Hands-on experience in self-independent operation of scanning electron microscopes including Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) data collection 
  • Experience in EBSD data processing and in handling complex multi-methodological datasets 
  • Demonstrable experience in acquiring third-party funding 
  • Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills 
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Diligent, reliable and autonomous approach to work 

Additional qualifications (PREFERABLE CRITERIA)

  • Proficiency in FAIR research data management
  • Experience in teaching at graduate and undergraduate level
