The Bible Society of Nigeria was based on eighth February, 1966 by means of the pioneering efforts of the late Dr. Francis Ezeogo Akanu Ibiam, the primary indigenous Governor of the defunct Japanese Area. Earlier in February, 1965 Dr. Ibiam had initiated a session with representatives of many of the Church buildings [Church organizations] in Nigeria on the necessity to type a nationwide Bible Society in Nigeria. It was the unanimous resolution of that assembly that The Bible Society of Nigeria be fashioned which consequently led to its formation and inauguration on February 8, 1966.

Earlier than 1966, The Society was underneath the supervision of the British and Overseas Bible Society [BFBS] which had operated in Nigeria way back to 1807. Then the Bible Home, Apapa was serving as a distribution centre to different neighbouring West African nations.
